Asian grocery stores and supermarkets stock ingredients, snacks and household goods that general American supermarkets often do not carry, organized by category rather than by country of origin in most stores. Produce and live or fresh seafood sections are usually at the back or side of the store, and weekend mornings bring the largest crowds and freshest restock. Many larger Asian supermarkets include a hot deli or food court counter selling prepared meals by the pound or as fixed plates, useful for a quick lunch while shopping. Labels are frequently bilingual or untranslated, so store staff can usually help locate a specific ingredient if you ask. Cash, cards and mobile pay are all commonly accepted at larger chains; smaller specialty shops may be cash-preferred.
Hours are published for 6 days a week. Typical hours are 10 amβ7 pm. Note that it does not open on Monday. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. You can reach Tokyo Japanese Food Store at (412) 661-3777; calling is usually the quickest way to ask about availability, prices or directions. More information is available on its website, tokyostorepgh.com.
On Google it holds a rating of 4.5 out of 5 from 422 reviews, which is a strong result for an asian grocery store in Pittsburgh and suggests consistent service.
Pittsburgh is in Pennsylvania, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Traffic in Pittsburgh peaks on weekday mornings and afternoons, so allow extra time then. Addresses read from the street number up to the city, state abbreviation and five-digit ZIP code; the map link on this page shows the exact spot.

I found this place years ago and even though I live far away now, I come back whenever I can. They haven't changed a bit! It's a perfect little shop of Japanese grocery staples, produce, snacks, meat and fish cuts, and even fresh bento! Everything is very reasonably priced. They have everything you need to make all the convenient stuff you think of first and all the good real meals you know and love. I always find something I like (daifuku mochi or instant ramen) and something new to try (umeboshi or yuzu juice), and it's a good place to buy snacks and cute dishware as gifts for friends. My go-to thing to do in college was buy a melon ramune drink and a bag of soy sauce senbei to share with my fellow commuters. Mmm, rice crackers. I still remember the crunch. Those were the days... Anyway, the staff have always been friendly and polite and always have answers to your questions. Now I will note that if you plan to pay with a bank card, there's a ten dollar minimum limit, but there's an ATM outside if you need cash so it's not a big deal. Plus the area it's situated in is nice too; the street it sits on has lots of other little shops to explore. Definitely fun as a stop on a summer w

What a gem of a market. I recently moved to Pittsburgh from NYC and have lived on both coasts. I was worried that it would be difficult to find Japanese cooking ingredients, snacks, sashimi, and the like. Iβm used to going to chain stores like Mitsuwa and Nijiya in California or Sunrise Mart in NYC. This small store has all the food products I would expect to find and at very good prices. I just got back from Japan and have been incorporating more of a Japanese diet since I got back. They have produce such as: shiso, gobo, daikon, Japanese cabbage, satoimo, renkonβ¦ and all of the essential cooking sauces and ingredients to make umami dishes at home. I also noticed that they offer Japan-grown rice along with other good short grain varieties. Weβve bought their sashimi a handful of times and make bowls with it at home. Itβs fresh and reasonably priced. Iβm so happy that theyβre in the neighborhood, as we donβt have any other Japanese markets nearby. I noticed that they just changed their hours so they are open later, until 7PM Tuesday-Saturday. They had a small selection of home goods, including Zojirushi rice cookers; but Iβd love to see them sell more home, beauty, and stationer

We love this little store. Itβs more important than ever to support small businesses and especially those that rely on international imports (due to tariffs). The fresh cooked Yakiniku bento is phenomenal - yakiniku beef, rice, pickled radish, pickled ginger, egg, egg roll, seaweed salad - all perfectly portioned and $12 (as of April 2025). Please continue to support these businesses that are the backbone of Pittsburgh culture.

~Small store with lots of variety owned by a couple. They have a variety of bakery items, bentos, candy, snacks, frozen items, fresh items, green teas, soups, noodles, rices, seasoning, and they even have dishware/kitchen items. ~The couple are nice and the store is well stocked. Due to covid they enforce store capacity which helps the store not become too crowded when shopping. The parking is free and they take multiple forms of payment. ~For many items being Asian imports the prices are pretty good. Some items are more expensive than other places depending what it is. There are some things I can't find at other stores but I can get them here at a decent price. ~Favorite buys include: fresh yomogi dango, miso paste, surimi/kamaboko, variety of furikake, seasoned rice crackers, and the bakery items

Let's start with the positives, they have free parking. Alright now the not so nice stuff. If your looking for fresh food this isn't the place to go, while they did have some it didn't look all that appealing to me. In terms of variety they had an alright selection but there are others stores near by like Panda Supermarket which has nearly everything this place does but at much better prices. Speaking of prices everything here is more than other places in the area, we went to Panda Supermarket after stopping here and I sort of wish we hadn't because I saw how much more Toyko Food Store charged for the exact same items. The staff here is rude and unpleasant which is unexpected for a culture that is generally respectful like I felt like they did not want me there even though I dropped close to $200. Hate to keep comparing to Panda but everyone there was super friendly and even helped me translate some stuff I could not understand. Bottom line for me and my family is we will never come here again and I would stongly recommend driving another 7 minutes to Panda Supermarket if your looking for not only Japanese food Staples but also other Asian foods.
